Brexit: the Angling Trust pledges to fight for best
deal to protect fish and fishing
With
the uncertainty surrounding what the EU referendum result will mean for
fish and fishing, the Angling Trust has pledged to fight for the best
deal possible and has issued the following statement:
1.
The AT will press for existing EU environmental legislation such as the
Marine Strategy Framework Directive, Water Framework Directive and the
Habitats Directive, all of which are written into UK law, to be
maintained and implemented in full to protect fish and their habitats.
2.
The AT will press for sensible regulation of agriculture, and for
subsidies to be linked to the achievement of improved outcomes for the
water environment.
3.
The AT will fight to ensure any new arrangements for sea fisheries
management benefit both fish stocks and recreational sea anglers.
4.
At a time of immense political turmoil, the need is greater than ever for
individuals, clubs and fisheries to join the Angling Trust & Fish
Legal to give us the resources and political weight of numbers to speak
up for fish and fishing and if necessary take legal action to influence
the many fundamental decisions which will be made about management of the
water environment over the coming months and years.
You
can read more about what the Angling Trust pledges to do in The Inside Angle blog
by Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal.

Fisheries and
clubs: Please ask to see a rod licence
The
Angling Trust is appealing to clubs and commercial fisheries to help
ensure anglers contribute to protecting fisheries by making it a
requirement of fishing on your waters that members and day ticket
customers have a valid rod licence to fish.
One
of the most common complaints we hear from anglers is that they don’t get
their licence checked and so they know people are getting away with
fishing without a licence.
If
every club and fishery joined in, we could stamp out rod licence evasion
and generate millions more to spend on fisheries within the Environment
Agency. If you need advice about how to do this, please download a factsheet
which contains the correct wording for your rules.

Your views
needed on bass fishing
The
Angling Trust is calling on bass anglers to help us get a better deal on
recreational fishing by taking part in a short survey. Together with the
Bass Anglers’ Sportfishing Society (BASS), we are gathering evidence on
the economic impacts on charter boats, the tackle trade and the local
economy of the unfair landing restrictions that were imposed on
recreational bass anglers last December.

Catch a crucian
... and snap up a prize!
There's
still time to get out there and catch a crucian to enter in the new photo
competition supported and judged by Chris Yates, Hugh Miles, the Angling
Trust and the National Crucian Conservation Project.
There's
some great prizes on offer, too. As long as your picture is taken in the
month of June it is eligible.

Action against
farmer over Bowden Burn fish deaths
SEPA
has announced it is to take action against a farmer under the
Environmental Liability (Scotland) Regulations 2009 following a major
fish kill on the Bowden Burn, a tributary of the river Tweed, that
occurred in April 2015.
Fish
Legal on behalf of River Tweed Commission (RTC) has been pressing SEPA to
take action on the basis that there is a presumption for it to do so
under its own Enforcement policy. Fish Legal will advise RTC on the
measures put forward by the farmer.

Cadets &
Junior Angling Championships
Partridge
Lakes complex in Cheshire played host to this year's Angling Trust Cadets
and Junior Angling Championships. Although there were some magnificent
catches by those taking part, it was disappointing to see only nine teams
compete in the Junior Championship, five fewer than last year.
