STRUGGLED PERSONALLY.  NEWS OF A FEW MORE FISH COULD HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE.

Fisheries News

Wednesday 18th March, 2015

There are some exciting fishery developments to tell you about in advance of the next edition of the Passport, which will be landing on doormats within the next couple of weeks. Of particular interest to Wye salmon anglers will be the amalgamation of the Foy Bridge and Creel fisheries into the new Foy Fishery for the March 15th to June 15th period. This pulls together four or five excellent salmon pools on a single ticket in a section of the river that given the right water conditions, is a good prospect for a spring fish.
Another amalgamation has been the Glanusk Tymawr and Canal & Rivers Trust water on the middle/upper Usk. From Tuesdays to Fridays inclusive, this creates around a mile of fantastic Usk water, with several salmon pools and quality trout fishing throughout its length.
For trout anglers, we are delighted to announce that Rossett & Gresford Flyfishers'water on the river Alyn in North Wales has opened for bookings. This is the second fishery in the Dee catchment to join the Passport scheme after the Glyndwr Preserve on the main river. A day ticket gives access to the club's 2 1/2 miles of the lovely small to medium sized river Alyn.
After a delayed start, the Wild Streams Volunteers have just about finished their winter programme of clearance works. Beats that have received attention include Abbey Dore and Chanstone Court on the Dore, the Cregrina beat of the Edw, Pilleth and Litton on the Lugg and the Upper Grywne Fawr beat in the Usk catchment. The trout in these small streams will take a few more weeks to wake up but once water temperatures start to rise in late March early April, the volunteers' work has ensured that beats that were previously a struggle to fish can now be enjoyed with relative ease. There will always be issues with vegetation on these smaller streams (we wouldn't want it to be too easy!) so please keep the reports coming in so that the volunteers can start to plan their programme of works for next winter.
Also for trout fishing enthusiasts, there are still some places remaining on the Tenkara Fishing Day, on Sunday 5th July at the Riverside Inn, Aymestrey. Tenkara style fishing has become increasingly popular in the past few years and looking at the catch returns, it's quite effective too! Please see the Events section of our website for more details.
In addition to Wild Streams Season Permits there are season rods for specific beats still available. Details for all season rods can be seen here including two new fisheries on the lower Usk (Clytha and Monkswood), both of which have some days still available.

Two day ticket rods have become available for the Wyesham beat on the lower Wye this coming weekend, priced at £85 each. With water levels dropping and a relatively dry forecast, there is a chance to fish one of the Wye's premier salmon beats for a spring fish. Please contact the office on 01874 712 074 if you would like to book.
Finally, we will be sending out the bottles of champagne to the first fish caught on both rivers next week. We believe the first on the Wye was caught on the morning of the 5th March and the first from the Usk came at 3.30pm on the 6th. If anyone knows otherwise we would like to hear from you!
All the best from WUF.
