Well another day gone by with no results from anywhere on the river. Still to high and coloured for bottom and lower middle beats/ Upstream ares look in perfect condition and yet ?????
LATEST, Another springer at last A 19lb sea liced fish from Lugg's Mouth to Glyn Cawte on a single hook Flying C
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Could it still happen? Looking back to that great year of 1988 I recall that springers were not that plentiful and at the Nyth as I recall we only had about 10 fish in the book by early June. However the 2sw fish then arrived in huge numbers and it all took off thanks to several spates and the fact that the Elan valley dams were doing maintainance work and needed to lower levels in the bottom dam. This gave us extra water with the gauge remaining unchanged for up to a week.
That year taught me several things. One was just how good the Wye once was and was again just for that one year. It also taught me how easy salmon were to catch when they were there in numbers, fresh and willing to take/ We had 206 for the season and with my employer ill and not many people visiting I fished it on my own quite a lot and several friends caught their first salmon too Five , six or seven a day were quite common and there was a day of 12 and another of 13 fish. I have to be honest and I asked myself at times just what I was doing bonking so many salmon on the head and selling them to the Griffin Inn at Llyswen. I suppose it was my job but I did return many as well and all hen fish after the end of September. I no longer envy the report of anglers and big catches as on reflection anyone with reasonable ability would probably have been able to do the same aka Pashley for instance under the same circumstances. As always right time, right place and plenty of fish then its a bit like shelling peas. See below. Had you been there -you could probably have done the same!
A friend came and caught eleven all from the same smallish pool where each one fought it out. Straight back in and have another one. How stupid can these fish be sometime? Other times - well we have all been there for sure when nothing seems to work. Happy days
