No improvements in conditions but as yet no further report of any fish deaths though temperatures looks set to rise again at least for today.

After that the Met office seem all over the place but are again warning of heavy showers/rain on Tuesday and Wednesday so lets hope they are right this time.

Below from Chris Bainger  EA

We are aware of some adult salmon mortalities and have had our fishery technical officers out to several locations on the Wye on Friday last week. We have confirmed three dead salmon near Whitney that were reported through the incident hotline. Importantly we needed rule out any other potential impacts such as pollution. Of which we did not find evidence

The loss of these fish is very unfortunate and as Peter has pointed out at the elevated temperatures and some of the diurnal fluctuations are making for a very stressful environment for these fish and mortality may be sadly inevitable.

We do have real time 24/7 deployment of sampling sondes which we are looking back over data constantly. You can see clearly the Dissolved oxygen fluctuations, lowest recorded on the 25th at 6am at 74.13% highest 20th 4pm 153.35%. Temperatures reached 25.50C Tuesday and Wednesday last week and we are starting to see this drop to 20.50C over the weekend . Fortunately with a forecast of rain, and cooler temperatures this week perhaps we will see some of these parameters improve.

We have been providing constant advice to clubs and riparian owners, and I am pleased for most have been responsible and ceased fishing (both salmonid and coarse).

We will continue to monitor and respond where needed to reports, again something that is so important that we are notified on the incident line numbers so that we can respond and have a full account and record of actual numbers.

We will keep you informed

Kind Regards

Chris
