At last! Fish passage legislation long overdue -
now we must act to protect ALL fish and rivers
The Angling
Trust has welcomed the Government’s long overdue fish passage legislation
which will speed up the process of removing obstructions to fish
migration, such as weirs, or constructing fish passes.
In general,
the Trust believes that weir removal is best for rivers and fish unless
it can be shown to be damaging to property or fisheries, in which case
alternatives such as fish passes should be considered.
Introduction
of this legislation is a key demand in the Angling Trust’s Save Our
Salmon campaign, because urgent action to ease thousands of barriers to
migration is vital to reverse the decline in salmon stocks. The work will
also benefit countless other fish species such as barbel, chub, trout,
eels and roach.

More delays
put future of tidal lagoons in doubt
The recent
setbacks suffered by the proposed Swansea Bay tidal lagoon is good news
for anglers.
With the
Government announcing a six-month review of the economic case for tidal
lagoons plus its refusal to agree to the developer’s proposed price
subsidy, the whole project is likely to be significantly delayed again –
if not put in doubt.
Fish Legal
and the Angling Trust are seriously concerned about the impact this
development will have on marine and migratory fish in the Severn Estuary.

Water giant
urged to come clean over Cumbria pollution
Questions
are being asked about exactly what is coming out of a temporary outfall
pipe that has been discharging from the United Utilities’ Kendal Sewage
Treatment Works straight into the river Kent in Cumbria since December
2015.
A
foul-smelling, cloudy discharge of sewage effluent became evident, after
Storm Desmond caused serious damage to the Lake District plant.
