18LB FISH REPORTED FROM LEGG MEADOW THIS MORNING BY DON MACER WRIGHT ON A SINGLE THUNDER AND LIGHTNING FLY.
19.5lb fish from the Pipes Pool, Wyesham to Gordon Richards on a Snaelda tube fly.

Well today we had this from Simon Evans, deputy 'know all' Director of WUF regarding the Wye spring catches;
--------------------------------------------
"err name another...he say's,

The spring runs in the early 70's were exceptional but the bounty was short lived..UDN saw to that, but of them I am pretty sure only 73 saw a declared catch of over 1,000 by end of March, let alone 1,000 in March. It was the exceptional year, almost twice as good as any other.

I have the reports for 1956-65 and 1971..the best year is 1958 at 853 declared.

By 1981 the decline was well underway and the Wye fishery report reads "The known rod catch had reached 113 by the end of March and represented quite a promising start to the season." This is only 8 years after the bounty of 1973.

In the 1990's the annual average to the end of March for the decade was single figures.

'Shifting baselines' is a common flaw in human personality. We need to acknowledge not only the productivity of the sea and river in the late 60's/early 70's that lead to such huge catches for a couple of years, but also that it was an unprecedented period in the history of the Wye salmon fishery when all the factors were in the salmons favour.

I am envious of those of you who were fishing the Wye just before UDN hit. It must have been amazing."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is me now TOM;

Below are the other years the MARCH rod catch was in the 1,000s sent me by another angler who was around at the time, from official figures and remember these were in my opinion nowhere near the true totals of fish caught.  SO YES SIMON- BE AMAZED- IT WAS AMAZING .
 Stop quoting stuff second hand when you were still a human project in waiting. Did you ever hear the word humility or understand it's meaning'?

So far this March 34 or so.  Bloody brilliant!!

                              Jan      Feb        Mar           Total
66.                         3.       123.     1240.           1366

67.                         8.       529.   2097.             2634
68.                         65.     351.    635              1051
72.                         9.       354.    1043.            1406
73.                        106.     708.    1218.            2032

Easy to explain there were  good sea conditions then and everything was in their favour and yet there were at least 10 years when the rod catch was in the 2,000 plus region during that time so it was not exactly nirvana was it. Still you would have told em why, poor spawning, bad migratory conditions for smolts,, high water, low water, High temperatures, frozen stream, poor reporting, no rods on river etc. No redd washout though as according to SMS there is no such thing!!
You have an answer for everything when its poor but when it looks better - WOW Look at me.
You were rumbled years ago by some, now it's nearly everyone.
