Natural Resources Wales officers are investigating after pollution was found in the Afon Llynfi downstream of Talgarth, Powys.
Sewage Funghi in stream near Talgarth
There has been a significant growth of sewage fungus in the river and a reduction in insects living in the river and in a number of feeder streams.
Sewage fungus is usually associated with polluted water and grows on any surface in response to organic nutrients getting into the watercourse.  The extent of the pollution is believed to be up to 5km.
There is also evidence to suggest that local groundwater has been contaminated. The pollution is thought to have been caused by spreading operations on land in the area.
Steve Morgan, Operations Manager for NRW said: “Our officers are investigating to confirm the source of the pollution, gather evidence and to identify those responsible.”

Latest belowfrom WUF.  Thanks for the mention of the RWGA cup for the heaviest fly caught Wye caught salmon.   It could have been all over on day one -if.only..

WUF UPDATE

Friday 18th March, 2016

Well, it finally stopped raining in the middle of the second week of March and slowly the rivers started to drop. However, it wasn't until the 12th that the first Wye salmon was caught and this was followed by a steady stream of fish taking the total as of today to 10.
The first Usk salmon came from the Isca water at Newbridge on fly yesterday (it's fly only on the Usk until the end of May). Our congratulations to Peter Austin the lucky captor - the champagne is in the post! The first Wye fish may need some comment although, arguably, there has been enough already! It came from Llangoed Pool from a boat in highish water to a yellow and black single hooked Flying C and netted after a 50 minute fight. It was just over 47" long and 27" in girth measured just above the dorsal fin.
It was an early running spring fish such as the Wye was famed for, with a touch of colour. A tight vent and intact fins showed it to be clean fish and not, as suggested, a kelt or rawner. The weight? In good order this fish might have weighed up to 44lbs according to some charts. However, it was rather thinner behind the midline and its weight remains subject to much speculation. As the captor, I can say it was a very big and heavy fish (my biggest)!
Trout fishing on the rivers has been challenging in the past couple of weeks, as is normally the case in March. Water and air temperatures are still quite low but most of the snow has now disappeared from the Beacons so fishing is expected to pick up towards the back end of the month.
Hatches of large dark olives and March browns are starting to build and we are already seeing the first grannom. The main river beats should be the place to be. Small stream trout anglers will have to wait a little longer as the tributaries are nearly always a couple of weeks behind.
Quite often reports are received in March of pools seemingly being devoid of trout. This is quite normal at this time of year - if there is nothing to feed on why be out in the open? However, it will all change in a few weeks time. Approach the same pool then and your faith will be restored!
There is now a cup for the heaviest fly caught Wye salmon commissioned in memory of the late Norman Owen. More details can be found here.
Readers will know we advocate single hooked Flying Cs and Sportfish now market these here along with Garry Evans here.

Single hook Flying Cs now available from both Sportfish and Garry Evans
Wild brown trout caught in March. Many early season trout are not as colourful as this one, being more silver after their winter's spawning.
The Passport arrives in next couple of days: we just beat the swallows (phew!). But the fishing season has properly started and now is the time to get out there if you are a salmon or trout fisher. Give the booking office a call for advice and don't forget your 2016 rod licence (obtainable from the Post Office website or us).
All the best from WUF.
