Seems WUF are flagging up some habitat work, see here
:WUF News
Some work on a small tributary -all very laudable and worth doing but there have already been reports on this work ie The Clewedog report by the Game Conservancy -largely kept under wraps as certain people didn't want its contents known, and also an in depth study by Robert Luxton, Cardiff University
Wuf say they are preparing a paper.(Is that a first and will we ever see it) I wonder what it will say, will it agree with the other studies and will it be peer reviewed? To flag up a few hundred yards of a minor tributary after 15 years is really neither here nor there.
Likewise the attempts to improve farming practices and prevent siltation. A laudable exercise but anyone who saw the river and its tributaries in full spate last night could have been left in no doubt as to just how much natural silt/gravel/debris is released in such a major flood from areas with little agricultural farming. Wye has always run brick red in spate and always will and whilst attempts to nullify any further increase are laudable its a bit like the politicians being arrogant enough to believe they can affect climate change. Still it will have two effects depending on what they want at the time;
(a) It will give the gravels a good flush out -(you can say that again) or
(b) it will silt the gravels up preventing spawning.
Yes you can have it both ways if you wish.
As for gravel movements well they would have been immense and any recent redds on the main stem and Irfon and Ithon will have suffered badly A free meal of eggs for the coarse fish, trout and grayling and any barbel won't even have to dig them up. We have however a Chief Executive who believes redd washout is a myth. Most of us who have witnessed it happening over decades know its a major problem in certain seasons. He needs to get out more!!!!!!

decision will help protect precious rivers
The Angling
Trust, Fish Legal and WWF-UK have secured a major step forward for the

agricultural pollution.
At a
Judicial Review in the High Court, the three organisations claimed
ministerial involvement had stifled action to address harmful pollution
from farms.

Defra's
proposals 'fall short of what is needed'
Meanwhile,
Defra's proposals to control agricultural pollution have been slammed by
the Angling Trust's Head of Freshwater Mark Owen for not going far enough
to tackle the problem.
"The
rules duplicate many existing regulations and even if they were enforced
they would only lead to a decrease in phosphate pollution of 2.4% when
the government’s own figures show a need to reduce it by 48%," said
Mark.

Action needed
to stop waste site falling into the sea
The Angling
Trust and Marine Conservation Society have written to two councils in
Devon urging them to take action to stop a landfill site at the mouth of
the Taw and Torridge estuary being washed into the sea.
Household
waste has been washed into the sea with every storm over the past five
years, leading to pollution fears which could threaten stocks of salmon,
sea trout and bass.
