Interesting bit below re the Tidal barrage which will go ahead no doubt.
Despite attempts to get it monitored in respect of fish kills, adult or juvenile, we see the only mitigation, and who knows how big that mitigation might need to be, will once again be in river enhancement and the endless barriers to migration solution. A similar outlook for the loss of mitigation stocking on the Wye and other rivers due to hatchery closure is seen as the way forward -by some. As said before mitigation from hatchery stocking is no longer an available option..
Big doubts as to how in river enhancement, NRWs day job anyway, will go any way to addressing the problem and the question is who pays for this. Will the developers who are causing a possible loss of fish be prepared to pay up to remedy it.
There is no way of knowing the possible fish losses until the barrier is built of course and only then will the scale of its impact be known. So a huge step into speculation and the only losers will be the fish and the angler, not forgetting some of the most expensive electricity ever generated.

Angling Trust
Lobbies EU for Bass Minimum Size Increase
The Angling
Trust has stepped up the pressure to see the long overdue introduction of a
42cm minimum conservation reference size (MCRS) for both recreational and
commercial bass fishing in order to allow the fish an opportunity to spawn
successfully before harvesting. The present stock crisis is very much due
to overfishing on the spawning grounds as well as a minimum size which
allows fishing for juvenile bass before they have had the chance to spawn.

Swansea Bay
Tidal Lagoon - Uncertain Impacts on Fish
On 9th June
the Secretary of State gave consent for the development of a massive tidal
lagoon hydropower project in Swansea Bay, the first of its kind in the
world. Although anglers in South Wales and the Bristol Channel are bitterly
disappointed by the long-awaited decision, persistent pressure from Fish
Legal and our member clubs is likely to result in a rigorous monitoring and
enforcement programme (far beyond what the developer had proposed), as well
as a ‘suite’ of river enhancements (such as barrier easing) to compensate
for possible impacts on salmon and sea trout. This means that, if –
contrary to the developer’s predictions – significant impacts do occur they
can be quantified and minimised, with the lessons gained likely to
critically influence further lagoon projects planned for the Bristol
Channel, north Wales and the Solway Firth. |

Highland
Council Publish Aquaculture Guidance
For eight
years Fish Legal has fought for public recognition of the fact that it is
the local planning authority (and not the Scottish Government) which has
responsibility for considering and managing the impacts that marine
aquaculture has on local wild salmon populations. The Highland Council's
new draft Aquaculture Supplementary Guidance published in May 2015 is the
first such guidance to explicitly recognise this. It also suggests various
ways in which the potential damaging impacts of sea lice on wild salmonids
can be managed, including the imposition of environmental management
schemes and temporary planning permissions. The new draft guidance is open
to public consultation until 19 July and Fish Legal members interested in
aquaculture are encouraged to respond here. |

Thames Water
£250,000 Fine Upheld
Fish Legal
welcomed the Court of Appeal’s decision at the beginning of June to uphold
the £250,000 fine imposed on Thames Water for polluting the Chase Brook in
Newbury Nature Reserve with sewage in 2012. Thames Water had appealed the
size of the fine, which they had been ordered to pay under new tougher
sentencing guidelines for environmental offences. In upholding the decision
of the Crown Court, the Court of Appeal said that companies with large
profits should be fined equally large sums for damaging the environment to
deter them from future offending - even if that meant “fines in excess of
£100 million”. Fish Legal has campaigned for many years to see fines go up
and better reflect the turnover of big business, believing that it is
imperative that ‘it does not pay to pollute’. |
