------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following a report of 'several' dead fungus covered fish on a middle Wye beat last week I thought this might be of interest and which I hope a friend might not mind me repeating here;

PS . We have had devestating disease this april/may on Dart. it has decimated our spring seatrout run and salmon too. UDN (or similar) is the primary condition and the lesions are then infected by 'in river' spores Saprolegnia which causes the  fungus and certain death. Much like on the Wye when I was a child . It's been deeply upsetting.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

See below the latest from WUF.   Not sure everyone will be euphoric about 16th June especially the salmon anglers who may well find their chosen beat compromised. Where else  in the country would this happen on a major salmon river.  Still the 'guides' will be busy at it and less face it those promoting it are not the ones seriously affected by it either.As in most things the revenue source is the main thing.. I notice one beat charges £45 per day for salmon and the same amount for coarse fishing and is pretty much booked up. Must be the most expensive coarse fishing in the country.
Another one says;

"COARSE & SALMON ANGLERS NOTE: Coarse rods must note than, on occasions, a salmon rod may also be on the beat and want to fish downstream through your swim. In such cases the coarse angler must temporarily give way to the salmon rod."

Year right -in your dreams!!

Salmon catches continue nicely and it seems this is a 'statistical improvement' which of course it is.  I don't recall last year being termed a 'statistical decline' do you?.
Lets all hope its not too hasty as we have been here several times before., Remember the "Back from the Brink' and 'How the Wye was Won' articles..

WUF UPDATE

11th June 2015

Some of our readers will be counting the days until 16th June (the start of the coarse fishing season or "The Glorious 16th" in case you didn't know) Its Tuesday next and fishers of all denominations will be looking at the weather forecasts in earnest. The common message is that there is going to be a significant amount of rain from early Saturday (13th) morning and, allied to the start of the Three Counties Show, it would seem to be a certainty!
All the rivers are dropping steadily today and as expected salmon catches have moved to the lower beats while on other welsh rivers, sea trout fishing is transferring to the night, despite somewhat chilly and windy evenings. Trout fishers must be used to fighting the breeze by now but the Wild Stream fisheries have often escaped the worst of the wind.
500th Wye salmon
After reaching 400 by the end of May this year, it is exciting to report that the Wye's 500th salmon was landed today. Bob Harrinton's fly caught 8lbs fish came from the Pipes Pool, Wyesham. Statistically, we are looking at a recovery.
The Usk
The 16th also heralds the end of the Spring Byelaws on the Usk. Worming prawning and shrimping become legal and fish may be killed and taken. However we ask that you restrain from killing fish while the river is beginning to show signs of recovery. That means always using the single hook Flying Cs or fly fishing and not using the worm, Please avoid taking coloured fish particularly(these are the early running spring fish most in need of protection). We make no apologies for these requests. Every fish is needed to ensure the next generation.
Prospects
Coarse fishing: If you haven't got your opening day/week fishing booked, then delay no longer! There are just a few slots left and the Wye fishes well in low and high water (and heights in between too!) Trout fishers will be finding the quarry is becoming a bit more discerning particularly if we get prolonged hot weather. There are still some Mayflies about and good hatches of various kinds of Olives.
Single Hook Flying Cs: They really work well and do the least damage of any similar lure
Wye Barbel: They cant wait for the 16th!
all There are still some Mayflies about and good hatches of various kinds of Olives. It would be better if the evenings were calmer for trout fishing!
So again we are waiting on the weather but salmon and trout fishers can book at half price for a 5.00pm start and on most fisheries you can get a discount of an extra person or day when you book two or more.
Coarse fishers - we await your reports and comments and wish you a successful and enjoyable day.

All the best from WUF
