Welsh Anglers
Seek Compensation for Massive Fish Kill
Agricultural
slurry pollution caused catastrophic fish mortality on the Olway Brook in
August 2013, due to farmer negligence when operating machinery at a slurry
pit. Over 73,000 fish of all species were killed on this tributary of the
river Usk, itself a special area of conservation. Fish Legal has advised
its members in relation to the incident and presented the farmer with a
claim for financial compensation as well as for further habitat work to
mitigate damage to the ecology of the Brook.

Fish Legal
Claims Compensation for Member Club Following Huge Fire and Explosions
Fish Legal
has sent a claim to Multiroof Building Products Ltd for its member club the
Todmorden Angling Society, claiming compensation for the pollution of one
of its most popular coarse fisheries. Grove Lodge - a fishery at
Littleborough in Lancashire - lies downstream of Multiroof’s former
factory. According to the Health & Safety Executive around 95,000
tonnes of combustible fluids were on site when a fire broke out in May
2012. The fire destroyed the factory, caused solvent to enter Grove Lodge
(killing many of the fish), in turn creating a strong smell of solvent
making fishing impossible. Fish Legal’s letter claims damages for the fish
kill, loss of amenity, loss of membership and day tickets income, as well
as legal costs.

New Angler Log
Book App Still Seeks Angler Input
Cefas are
working to engage anglers as citizen scientists to map the distribution and
health of wild freshwater and marine fish. To achieve this we are
developing a free electronic logbook (smartphone app) as a reporting
platform, which we hope anglers will also find valuable for recording their
fishing experiences.
