Operation
TRAVERSE - and a Whole New Dawn...
Dilip
Sarkar MBE, Angling Trust National Enforcement Manager, in his new blog
describes how work in this area has developed rapidly over the last few
months and not only concerns the Voluntary Bailiff Service but also
relates to locating fisheries enforcement within the much wider framework
of Rural, Wildlife, Organised, Business and unfortunately more recently -
Hate Crime.

Developing Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon Plans Similar in Cardiff Bay
Following
the public inquiry into the Swansea Bay tidal lagoon hydro scheme last
year - on which the Planning Inspectorate is due to report and make its
recommendations by March 2015 - the developers, Tidal Lagoon Power, have
now informed the Inspectorate about plans to develop a further tidal
lagoon in Cardiff Bay, with an application due in 2017. The eastern wall
of the lagoon would be only 2km from the mouth of the River Usk, a
Special Area of Conservation listed for its salmon runs. The risks from
this new technology to migratory fish, which the developers say are
minimal but which are still not clear, therefore look set to come under
increasing scrutiny.

DC / Welsh
Water Damaged Protected Lake, Llyn Padarn
The Welsh
environmental regulator, Natural Resources Wales, has remade its decision
over damage to the protected artic char at Llyn Padarn in North Wales,
following a successful legal challenge by Fish Legal in 2014. Fish Legal
welcomes the decision that DC Welsh Water caused environmental damage to
the lake, which it had complained about for decades. However, despite NRW
confirming significant human impacts on the SSSI and the protected
sub-species of fish, which has suffered long-term decline, we are disappointed
to see those responsible not being subjected to enforcement. This
continues to leave the rare and unique fish in a precarious position on
the edge of extinction.

New Year Fish
Kill on Grand Union Canal
Fish Legal
has been instructed by the Wreake Angling Club following a fish kill on
the Felckney to Saddington Tunnel stretch of the Grand Union Canal. The
club's first match of the year, which took place on 5 January, was a
disaster and the club fears that the rest of its season may be lost as a
result of what is understood at this stage to be pollution from an
agricultural source.
