In a recent open letter Mr Marsh Smith wrote this;

"Our small scale operation was not the first choice but Cynrig was not available until 2008ish. We left when the landlord tried to up the rent to unreasonable levels –"

The above landlord, Tom Nicholls wishes that all who received that letter for it to be known that this is untrue.  He did not seek to raise the rents.  As  understand it from him  he had a lease which had not been paid.  He asked why and was told the hatchery was not needed that year but might be needed next.  He requested the terms of the lease be honoured.  It was not and until he threatened to sue WUF that his lease was paid.  He extends an invitation to anyone who might wish to visit the hatchery which is still there, to do so at any time.
Incidentally he tells me that one of the original parr that were in his ponds was caught a couple of weeks ago and resulted in a salmon weighing 5lbs.

Dredging Up Trouble

Environmentally damaging dredging schemes must not be prioritised over other proven flood-prevention measures - that's the strong warning to Government from the Angling Trust and the Blueprint for Water Coalition in advance of this year’s Autumn Statement from Chancellor George Osborne.

NEW: Angling Trust Coach Licence

As the National Governing Body for angling, the Angling Trust is the only organisation which offers angling coaches a Licence to Practise scheme. This licence proves to parents, children, groups, organisations and others that a coach is appropriately qualified and regularly engages in training to maintain the highest possible coaching standards.
We've recently reviewed and restructured the Licence, making it now even more accessible and affordable.

Humberside Police Set Standard on Angling Prejudice

Humberside Police recently received a report via the Angling Trust that the owner of a fishery was publicising the fact that he was banning Eastern Europeans from using his facility because they were stealing the fish. This practice quite clearly raised legal and ethical questions around what the Police response should be in respect of this.

Fish Legal: Scottish News Special

Wild Fisheries Review
The Scottish Government's Wild Fisheries Review Panel has submitted its final report. The key recommendation is the replacement of the established "District Salmon Fishery Boards" with a network of "Fishery Management Organisations" responsible for all species management operating under the guidance of a new Scottish Government wild fisheries unit. This would be a significant change from the 'grass roots' based system currently in place. There are also proposals for introducing a ban on killing salmon except under licence.

Fish Migration
Fish Legal has recently submitted a freedom of information request to the Canal and River Trust, to uncover the truth about the damaging impact its structures are thought to have on all fish migration to upstream spawning grounds - a key reason for some rivers failing environmental objectives. We shall shortly be writing to the regulator in England and Wales in similar fashion.

Flood Risk Management Videos

These videos provide some really clear case studies about effective techniques to reduce flooding and pollution which we need to adopt as a widespread response to the floods of recent years. Expensive dredging of rivers is much less effective (and in many cases pointless) and it damages wildlife, including fish. Please forward this email to as many people as possible to promote sensible catchment management rather than the knee jerk response of dredging.
