First of all let me state that I was obviously NOT at the Wye Salmon Fishery owners meeting the other evening so my comments below are what has been relayed to me from a variety or sources. It has been described variously as bizarre and a shambles.
At one point the Chairman Mr Timmis walked out but unfortunately returned shortly as I understand one member in particular was making his life difficult with persistant questions. I expect as usual most of the sat there nodding sagely but not saying a word.
Below are a few key points- as I understand them.
A postal ballot will be made of all members to see if the WSFOA should vote to object to hatchery closure (Despite the fact this has already been done by NRW and will make no difference now).) and despite the fact that they had already had the WSA letter which made the views of most pretty clear. Votes will be opened IN THE PRESENCE OF AN SNR SUPPORTER. Crikey -just shows how much trust they have in the executive to give them an honest answer. Apparently a vote of 65% for the motion will be needed before an objection is lodged.
The Chairman apparently suggested a change of name to The Wye Catchment Fishing Association) thereby trashing more of the Wye's history. This will mean the Association will be open to ALL riparian owners, salmon, trout, grayling and presumably coarse anglers too. membership fee will be halved but should provide more income, To whose benefit will this be. Well WUF's of course as no doubt they will benefit as usual from the extra income plus it will widen their 'power' base and will claim they represent everyone on the Wye. Anglers of course don't even come into the equation. You can see of course whose hand is behind the whole thing can't you.
People who tried to raise relevant and serious points were met with delaying tactics and one even told to shut up I understand.
They intend it seems to set up a Forum next season to discuss the questions raised yesterday which they refused to discuss at the time.
Seems this organisation lurches from one self inflicted crisis to another with very little signs of democracy.
Did no one question the conflict of interest by at least two members on the committee.
Did no one suggest how those who resigned might be persuaded back on board.
Did no one ask how the organisation could once again be given some legitimacy and credibility amongst the paying anglers on the Wye and in the wider world
Lets hope someone among them has the b==ls to have a clear out amongst the brainwashed disciples as the Wye needs a strong, independent Wye Salmon Fishery Owners Association as never before.
