Before you read the below you would be advised to take a deep breath and marvel at the audacity of this newsletter. The sheer hypochrisy,, superiority complex and sociophobic tone of it.

YOU 80% who opposed the hatchery closured now nothing .   We know what is best for you so that's what we shall do.

I will remind you again and will go on doing so, that this is the man who started the first WUF/owners hatchery, who latterly built a hatchery with owners money and who stocked fish all over the catchment. Who claimed success on the Lugg and Arrow with parr they themselves stocked out .Who supported these and the EA hatchery with catch up broodstock.  Who intially supported the SNR project and after just two years now turns his back because it's expedient to do so.
All this time he never really believed it would work and has never done so and there are doucuments which show this.  So ask yourself WHY.  Ask yourself why did he, the Chairman of WSFOA  and a couple of other with similar agendas, get the owners committee to vote down the fact that the great majority of its membership wanted to sign up to the SNR project and help to fund it, which some did.
WHY did he do it if he believed it didn't work or claim that it does in fact do damage no less

Why is the salmon infrastructure falling to bits, why do we have a shortened  season at the front end and not the back,  methods restrictions, 100% C & R,, barbel anglers in many of or salmon runs and pools. Why do we have very few gillies any more instead of up to £200 per day 'guides' who have only a handful of fish between them and often no knowledge of the beats they are fishing. Why do we have grown men crawling up spawning/nursery streams catching six inch trout and parr -or often not- and saying 'Thanks Wuf, great day we will be back.'  Amazingly depressing.

Oh and by the way its perfectly OK to catch the pregnant, black, stale, clapped out spawning fish because they are tougher and survive better.  Never had any fish die during the catch up at the hatchery  -well no none of those that showed signs of any damage or the inability to survive the process were ever sent there were they.

Wye & Usk Foundation News Update

October Update: Hatcheries

What on earth has the Tuscan astronomer, physicist and mathematician Galileo Galilei got to do with the recent Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Hatchery Consultation? On the face of it absolutely nothing at all. Galileo is perhaps best known for promoting the view that the earth goes round the sun, an idea originally put forward by Copernicus in 1543. His views got him serious trouble with the religious zealots of the day who locked him up for the rest of his life. At that time, everyone was so certain that the sun went round the earth.
Although not a common practice in Renaissance Italy, had a consultation taken place, it would be reasonable to assume that rather more than 80% (the %age of respondents opposing the hatchery shut down) would have supported this view. But how long did it take before it was realised that in fact the earth went round the sun?
We offer this comparison because in all probabilities, NRW is actually acting in the best interests of our rivers. It's not simply finance that guided this decision, it's a genuine desire to move forward with fisheries management along the lines of their stated principles and the best available science. Historically, hatcheries have been a barrier to so many crucial fisheries actions and costed out over decades, has taken millions of pounds in today's money from more beneficial projects. Of course In Wales, none of this would have mattered if hatcheries actually worked (they don't) and didn't damage our stocks (they do).
At the end of a year when it appears there is a serious problem across all North Atlantic salmon fisheries, we need to end the bitterness and divisiveness that surrounds this issue and move forward with a lot more actions to save the salmon.
Salmon anglers sometimes hear that catching fish late in the season is the most dangerous time to do so for the fish. Please be assured that it isn't. The danger time for catching and releasing salmon is when they are fresh in from the sea; when water temperatures are high and when the angler is using a multi-hooked spinner, worm or prawn/shrimp. None of those factors should apply between now and the end of the season.
How do we know? Every year until now, fish have been caught up for the hatchery late in the year. The only deaths that occurred were through deep hooking - failure to use single hook spinners.
Should the opportunity arise in the remaining twelve days you might try a single or double hooked Sunray Shadow when conventional flies fail. Cast across and strip it back. You will get lots of follows, swirls and very occasionally a solid take.
In other news, the Glyndwr Preserve fishery on the river Dee in North Wales is now open for autumn/winter bookings. The Welsh Dee is

widely recognised as another fine grayling river with international championships held there every year. There is also some excellent spring trout fishing available up until the end of June. The Glyndwr Preserve offers over 2.5 miles of double bank for up to 8 anglers per day (4 day tickets bookable through the Passport).

All the best from WUF.

HAVE TIO SAY THE SUNRAYS ARE A BIT OVERDRESSED!
