What can I say. Conditions continue to improve and sooner or later a fish will be caught. Salmon have been see in Ross area but jumping fish are almost certainly kelts with fresh fish usually a sedately head and tail and identification is almost impossible at a distance - and sometimes for some even on the bank!
Still keep a look out for any fin clipped kelts and of course any new fish.
LATEST. STILL NOTHING.
LATEST -LATEST .SOMETHING
Fish reported at last from Lysdinam, well upriver at the Ithon/Wye junction and where it should be after all the water. Fish taken on a Mar Lodge fly by Steve Grimwood at 18lbs. lets hope its not alone.! Congratulations to him.
Don't forget the dying art of the wooden Devon minnow, often more effective in certain situations than the F/C and long time favourite on the Wye..
Although the flying C is the bait of choice now it can cause a lot of damage from deeply hooked fish. Don't think this was as prevalent with the Devon minnow. Many were home made on a small lathe and self painted. Yellow belly, Black and Yellow, Brown and Gold, Blue and Silver were all popular depending on water colour in sizes from 2" to 3 1/2". Not sure it mattered too much though. My best fish of 32lbs was taken on a wooden minnow I found on the bank. Green and yellow with black tiger like stripes down the sides. Someones concoction but it worked for me. Wire mounts made from Alasticum wire, a tulip bead a hook and a swivel and were easy to make. The plastic tube with attached tulip was another method but I don't think it spun as well and really needed another swivel somewhere to prevent line twist. Fished in conjunction with a Wye lead, swivel at each end was best, with a quick addition of extra weight with a spiral lead if required. Could also be fished with a three way swivel to which a lighter b/s dropper with a bullet or bomb attached to break off if snagged. It is less prone to snagging than a Flying C which is not easy to fish deep and slow which is where the Devon scored, though certainly the Devon was not as good fished upstream and retrieved where the Flying C can be so effective.
Remember most of the really big Wye fish and most of the Springers in the past were taken on this bait. It may be out of fashion but if it worked then it will surely work now and can work where the Flying c cannot. Usually fished off an Ambassadeur reel, 10 foot spinning rod and at least 15lb Maxima, often 18lbs. Crazy to fish too light in the spring with still the possibility of a really big fish. Bit more work to set up than simply tying on a Flying C which works well because everyone is using it. Could be worth a try?
A shoal of wooden Wye Devons.
