A small rise on upper beats from yesterdays heavy showers.  Not significant but will probably introduce considerable colour on these upper sections for the early part of the weekend. Weather conditions look excellent.

Dont't fogeet to repond to the NRW hatchery debate if you have no done so.

I saw this question asked of the WUF Director in another place;

"Would you reveal to the world why you appeared to support SNR publicly, its in your sales brochure, and yet its the devils brew a short while later?"

Many of us would like the answer to that question and how the WSOA will respond to that inasmuch as he backed the SNR project at their meetings too, as did most of the other owners.

See below the latest from WUF.
Newcomers should be aware that the picture of the kelt shown is a poor example and a great many of the fish are in much better physical condition than this and even for experienced rods need some examination.
Silver colour of kelts  is often a harsh metallic silver with no blush of bluey /grey along its back, a distended vent and more often than not gill maggots too.  They can be any size and I know of one person who some years ago landed a (weighed) kelt of 29lbs.   Kelts have never been particularly scarce and catch depends on river conditions and heights. There is also an odd baggot around some years  -an unspawned hen fish, often in better condition than a kelt.

Wye & Usk Foundation News Update

28th March 2014

The 2014 litter pick is well underway downstream of Hay now water levels have gone down. Please click here to view progress or find out how to take part. We are very grateful to the River Wye Preservation Trust for their support of this project. You can find out more about this trust here.
It is encouraging to report that quite a number of kelts are being caught. The high water didn't wash them all out to sea as might have been expected. They can be extraordinarily silver and for many years they were extremely scarce so newcomers to salmon fishing need to be able to make this distinction.
We are looking for a volunteer to help with the many consultations we undertake especially in the area of hydropower and abstraction licensing. Please contact us via the numbers below if you can help. We have also been advertising for an additional farm adviser here. If you are interested please get in touch.
Sea trout fishing starts on 1st April on Tywi and other West Wales rivers and there is a new webpage reporting catches here. In between blustery cold spells there have been some great rises on both Usk and Wye. March Browns have been seen along with some Dark Olives around lunch time.
Wye salmon catches didn't start until the second week with an 18lb fish from Newbridge-on-Wye, well upstream. However, steady catch reports since have taken the total to 46 (already above the 5 and 10 year averages for the month), including 3 fish over 30lbs. Usk has reported fish as far up as Abergavenny and also below Usk town.
With the prospect of significant rain looking remote (although we can't promise what the temperature will do), prospects look fair for Wye salmon and for trout fishing in both catchments.
The Booking Office is once again offering 3 salmon rods (or days) for the price of 2 on selected beats.
Previous litter picking group. This year's Hay downstream project is well underway.
A well mended salmon kelt. Kelts need to be treated carefully and returned as quickly as possible.
From April, we will be sending out monthly reports/reviews specifically on salmon, sea trout and trout & grayling fishing and, from June, coarse fishing too.
All the best from WUF.
