Apart from experiences with fish, we as anglers often have encounters with nature that most members of the population would never experience. For example over the years I have had several encounters of the Otter kind.
Always saw the odd otter on the upper river even when there were not supposed to be many, if any about.
One was an evening at the bottom of the Nyth when I was fishing for trout. I hooked a fish in the stream which kited round into a deepish slack. There was a big swirl and everything went solid. I thought of course I was into a pike. I knew I was probably in trouble as it went into midstream and came up towards me and envisaged a prolonged fight. However as it came opposite me an otter head popped up, looked at me, spat out the fish and dived never to be seen again . I retrieved a worse for wear grayling about half a pound.
Another incident was at Glasbury fishing for pike with two deadbaits on the bottom when downstream of me I saw an otter coming upstream towards me obviously hunting. I was concerned it might pick up one of my deadbaits or if I tried to retrieve them chase the fish in. Before I could do anything the otter can up right under the rod tips , saw me and crash dived brushing one of the lines and nearly pulling the rod in.
A third incident was at Glawye one winter morning when I was sat quietly fishing for grayling. I became aware of a disturbance on the bank below me and saw what I first thought were two dogs gamboling with each other. As they came close I could see it was two otters having a good time playing with each other., They were totally oblivious of me and in the end I had to stand up and show myself otherwise they would have run me down..
They can be found some way from the river too. Walking away from the river with a friend and his terrier one mornig the dog showed interest in what looked like a badger hole. This was at least 150 yards from the river. The dog went in, furious barking at which an otter exited stage left from another hole and legged it to the river.
\One of the best sights was an otter standing on a midstream rock with an eel of about a couple of pounds wrapped around its neck I watched it for ages as it gained the upper hand after quite a struggle and demolished most of it. Not many eels for them these days!!
