An experience away from the Wye .

A week on Lake Nasser in Egypt after Nile perch.
A flight to Cairo and then another to Luxor.  Night in a hotel and then out on the lake.  My son and I and two other friends  Two trolling boats and a mother ship providing food and other essentials.

An early lesson learn't on the fist troll around an island with really big plugs. I had previously filled a multiplier with 40lb nylon.  On the first take a good fish was hooked, ran off whereupon the reel jammed and the fish broke me with ease.  A lot of line on a big multiplier needs to be put on tightly otherwise the line can bed down into the rest on the spool and this is what happened. Should have done it properly.  Amazingly on the next run round the island we saw the big plug on the surface and retrieved it.  To cut a long story short the fishing was not great. We had a few perch to about 45lbs but nothing really big.
Best experience was after dinner one night. I asked the cook if he had any spare meat as I heard the lake held catfish.  He gave me half a goats heart.   We slept on the trolling boats and just at dusk I put the goats heart out on a big single hook. Put the multiplier into free spool with the check engaged. I lay there for about an hour listening to my son snoring when the reel started to click.   Something was taking of with the bait slowly and stealthily.  I gave it several yards then struck into it. To say the least there was considerable resistance as the fish ran off and I quickly awoke my son and the two friends on the other boats also came over.   After a fair battle I got the fish to the side of the boat and lanterns revealed a massive head, wide flat mouth and whiskers to die for.   My friend managed to manhandle it into the boat and it was of course a catfish, What species it was|I have no idea but suspect it weighed about 25lbs or so.

Did the same another evening but this time I was broken as the fish charged off like an enraged bullock.  Other highlights were the huge Nile crocs, large and lesser Egrets that we  see here now and then, various other species of birds plus a night in a bay where hundreds of large frogs/toads croaked the night away and it was impossible to sleep.
Ended with a visit to the Pyramids  (awesome), Valley of the Kings (impressive) Collosus of Nemnon (big) Luxor temples (excellent) Cairo museum of antiquities (fantastic)  Overnight sleeper train back to Cairo  was interesting too.  Strange how the memory works as I can recall everything about the trip expect what we ate.  Couldn't have been that great could it.   Only downside was that although the skipper of our boat was ok in general you can keep the Egyptians as far as I am concerned.
