Angling Trust tells RSPCA: Stop blaming anglers for plastic and litter problems


The Angling Trust has urged the RSPCA to stop blaming anglers for the plastic problem affecting marine and freshwater environments. In an article published in The Guardian, the RSPCA suggested that the majority of litter-related wildlife incidents were caused by discarded fishing tackle. In response, the Angling Trust said most anglers were responsible custodians of our countryside and coasts who were engaged in a number of litter clean-up campaigns, and invited the RSPCA to work with us to help highlight and tackle the issues. Want to help tackle illegal fishing? Apply now for the VBS
The Angling Trust has resumed recruitment of Phase 1 Volunteer Bailiffs to help in tackling illegal fishing and fish poaching. Successful applicants will be trained by policing and enforcement professionals to keep watch on fisheries and report incidents and suspicious activity to the Environment Agency and Police.
Twenty volunteers will be recruited in each of the six enforcement regions. Find out more



EA publishes revised salmon byelaws: download a copy


The Environment Agency has published its revised Salmon and Sea Trout Protection Byelaws which came into effect at the start of the year. The byelaws are different from the confirmed 2018 salmon byelaws and reflect the changes made after the Angling Trust lobbied the Agency last year - the key amendment being the withdrawal of Byelaw 13 on method restrictions. Bluefin tuna campaign gets huge boost - from Ireland
The case for a UK live-release recreational fishery for the magnificent Atlantic Bluefin Tuna has received a huge boost - from Ireland. Approval has been given for Irish recreational anglers to take part in a science-based catch, tag and release programme. Recently, the Angling Trust met with Fisheries Minister George Eustice to put the case for a UK live-release recreational fishery. Read more

Still time to have your say on coarse Close Season


Anglers have until March 11 to officially have their say on the Coarse Fishing Close Season on rivers in England. The Environment Agency is consulting on three options: keeping the current close season, changing the dates of the close season, or removing it altogether. Angling clubs invited to take part in volunteering survey
The Angling Trust is inviting freshwater angling clubs to take part in a short survey to identify what future advice on volunteering would be useful. As part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract, the Environment Agency is investing fishing licence income in funding the Angling Trust to upskill angling clubs in their delivery of volunteering. The survey is anonymous and should take about 5 minutes to complete. Closing date is Friday, March 15.

Clubs & Fisheries Roadshows
The Angling Trust is running a series of roadshows across the country to provide tips and guidance to clubs and fisheries wishing to improve facilities and provide better, safer and more enjoyable angling for all. These afternoon events, delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency and funded from fishing licence income, are open to any angling organisation and are free to attend. In the coming weeks, the roadshow will be visiting Leigh in Greater Manchester, Durham and Walsall. Find out more

Anglian Water admits fish kill on Cam after years of denial
After years of denial, Anglian Water has admitted that failures at its sewage treatment plant in Milton, Cambridge caused a fish kill on the River Cam. Fish Legal pursued the case on behalf of its member club, the Cambridge Fish Preservation and Angling Society, who reported long-term damage to fish stocks, particularly at Baits Bite Lock where big bream numbers declined after the pollution. Anglian Water has agreed to pay the angling club damages for the loss of amenity and loss of income from match fishing but still disputes whether the anglers are entitled to claim for restocking and further litigation is expected. Kent Police join crackdown on illegal fishing and fish theft
Kent Police has become the latest force to sign up to Operation Traverse - the multi-agency initiative started five years ago to tackle fish theft and illegal fishing. At the official launch, the force pledged to continue to work closely with key partners, such as the Angling Trust and Environment Agency, to effectively tackle fisheries crime. Read more
