Fisheries charity urges Government to understand, value and act
for rivers in Wales
The fundamental message from a seminar organised by
fisheries charity Salmon & Trout Conservation Cymru in Builth Wells
recently was that agricultural pollution of Welsh rivers and streams has
reached endemic proportions and that time is running out to protect the wild
fish and other aquatic wildlife that depend on clean fresh waters to survive. Read

New report from salmon farming’s biggest company confirms
that Scotland is the “dirty man of global aquaculture”
Newly
published data in the 2016 Annual Report from Marine Harvest, the world’s
largest salmon farming company, shows that its Scottish salmon farms lag very
far behind its operations elsewhere in the world in controlling the
devastating sea lice parasite. Read more: http://www.salmon-trout.org/new-report-from-salmon-farmings-biggest-company-confirms-that-scotland-is-the-dirty-man-of-global-aquaculture/news/431
How can we deal with silent but potentially deadly river
invaders?
Under the surface of our rivers lives an alien world, where new,
foreign animals are rapidly establishing homes. Paul Knight, CEO of fisheries
charity Salmon & Trout Conservation UK (S&TC UK) said: “With
increasingly stretched budgets, we are in danger of taking our eye off the
ball. The only way to establish whether new or existing invasive species
are starting to take hold in our rivers is for more intensive monitoring, but
this is not happening at the level needed to detect problems.” Read more: http://www.salmon-trout.org/how-can-we-deal-with-silent-but-potentially-deadly-river-invaders/news/427
Where is the salmon you're eating being farmed?
Unfortunately, the growth of
this industry has been at the peril of wild fish. Did you know that high
levels of sea lice parasites spilling from fish farms are threatening
Scottish wild salmon and sea trout populations? Treatments to control the
spread are in place but parasites are gaining resistance and numbers are
frequently over the recommended ‘Code of Good Practice’ threshold. Read more:

Freshwater
environments threatened by farmyard slurry
Fisheries charity Salmon &
Trout Conservation Cymru have reacted with dismay at yet another major river
pollution incident in Wales, which saw up to 450,000 litres (99,000
gallons) of slurry leaked into a tributary of the River Honddu near
Abergavenny. Read more: http://www.salmon-trout.org/freshwater-environments-threatened-by-farmyard-slurry/news/429
Hampshire invertebrate
research could spark a revival for ailing rivers
In a unique agreement of its
kind, the Environment Agency (EA) in Hampshire and Salmon & Trout
Conservation UK (S&TC UK) have for the first time agreed key
environmental local bespoke targets for the Rivers Test and Itchen to help
drive ecological improvements. S&TC UK believe this is a precedent for
other rivers to follow. Read more: http://www.salmon-trout.org/hampshire-invertebrate-research-could-spark-a-revival-for-ailing-rivers/news/423

Your
auction needs you! We need a dead dipper!
We are
very fortunate that the renowned New Forest wildlife sculptor, Geoffrey Dashwood,
has generously agreed to donate a specially created bronze sculpture of a
‘Dipper’ to our 2017 Auction. To create this highly desirable
masterpiece for us Geoffrey needs to locate a dead dipper so that he
can model it from the real thing. If anyone comes across a dead dipper
on their beat, please could they get in touch with Geoffrey on : 01425
461617. It could be kept in a freezer until ready for
collection.
And finally...Do you belong to a club that can offer a day's
fishing for one or two rods? Have you got an attractive piece of
angling memorabilia that you can donate? Or - thinking outside the box
- some other sporting activity, such as a day's shooting? We have
even had delicious cases of wine donated - they always go down
well! Please help the 2017 auction be our best one
ever! If you would like to participate, please contact
Veronica Kruger, our Auction Co-ordinator, at auction@salmon-trout.org.
She would love to hear from you. Thank you.
