-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Quite a spread in this months Trout and Salmon by the editor who paid a two day visit last season to the Rectory and Goodrich apparently courtesy of WUF.     Caught a couple of fish too.
Always love it when someone on his first visit to the river tells we locals all how good everything is!!!!!!!!!!!

See below from WUF.  We already have a trophy for the biggest fly caught Wye salmon. Ah well.

WUF Update

6th March 2017

I once read that there is a 75% chance of the weather being the same the next day. If this year is anything to go by, that figure may be higher. The seemingly endless dry days of December and January have given way to what are promising to be endless wet days.
So on the magic 3rd March, the salmon and trout opening day for both Usk and Wye, we find ourselves again in the middle of the rainy season. The rivers are high and the likelihood of any serious fishing taking place looks remote on most beats - perhaps the upper Usk might offer a chance but there is yet more rain on the way.
Farlows of Pall Mall, the parent company of Sportfish of Winforton have commissioned a trophy for the largest fly caught fish in England and Wales. The winner of the trophy will get a beautifully engraved bottle of sloe gin, which is quite the largest I have ever seen, presented by Foxdenton Estates! Conditions of entry are here and similar to the Malloch trophy north of the border. It may be early to speculate for this year but a Wye angler would probably have won in 2016!
When the rains do abate, it will be anyones guess as to where the first fish will be caught. There is a notable new addition to the Fishing Passport: Letton Court on the middle Wye offers fantastic fishing for both salmon and coarse species. In fact, it could be the place to try for the first Wye salmon of the season when the levels do drop.
On the Usk, we should have the some new middle river water open for day tickets very soon too - please watch this space. Elsewhere, we just sense a little more pressure on bookings this year so grab a season rod or book early to avoid disappointment.
WUF is no longer selling rod licences. They can be bought on line here where you can find details of charges and other recent changes.
One of the most unlikely benefits of the rain took place on 22nd February when the Elan dams finally over-topped, and they did so spectacularly with one of the highest flows recorded in recent years - the equivalent of 0 to 60 in 4 seconds! This spread our gravel, most of which which had been waiting high and dry since September, downstream ready for another application in the summer.
So expect spring to arrive sometime during the month. Please keep an eye on the gauges and forecasts so you can grab a day between rain and good luck for the coming season.
All the best from WUF.
