An early morning 15lb fish reported from Wyesham today

Some of you may not have seen this.  Whilst every respect to those who carried out the run and the motives behind it ,if you spend 25.million over 24 years and have nothing to show at the  end of it why on earth would you keep pouring money into a seemingly bottomless pit.

All the problems the river has now were there in plain sight many years ago.   Having watched the debacle for all that time, most of it on the river on a daily basis why keep funding a seemingly bottomless pit I ask myself.  More weir removal on barriers that are not impassable to fish makes little sense when eslewhere in the world salmon negotiate obstacles they could only dream about on the Wye.

Has there been a project on the Wye that has made a noticeable difference to fish stocks or the health of the river.  If so please tell me and I will reconsider

Marathon des Salmon – The Usk If you’ve been following the Foundation for a while, you may remember the ‘Marathon des Salmon’ run completed by our Chairman, Charlie Newington-Bridges, whereby he ran the length of the Wye in 5 days to raise money for the Wye and Usk Foundation. Backing on the success of that ambitious run, Charlie and three others decided to do the same, but along the Usk this time instead. Starting at the source on the 3rd of June and reaching Newport only 3 days later, Charlie and the team ran the length of the Usk – an incredible 80 miles. Charlie has kindly made the Foundation one of the two charities which he and the team continues to collect donations for. As it stands, the donations have surpassed the target and for that, we at the Wye and Usk Foundation thank Charlie, the team and everyone who has donated. Weirs on the Brecon Honddu. Last week, the removal of a weir on the Brecon Honddu was completed by our habitat Team. Along the main stem of Honddu are five man-made weirs. Whilst all are passable in the right conditions, the combination of these redundant structures limit the movement of fish going up and downstream and contribute to the poor health of this important spawning tributary. Additional funding has been secured and consents are being worked up for the removal of another weir and the modification of 2 more by the Wye and Usk Foundation. In addition, Natural Resources Wales are removing their old gauging weir above Brecon. Once complete, we expect to see a marked increase in salmon and trout populations. The baseline monitoring has been done, and we look forward to sharing the results in a few years. Funding was secured from the Welsh Government by Afonydd Cymru as part of our shared objective to enhance and restore the Usk’s Special Areas of Conservation.
