PIKE.
Having fished for pike for several decades I have from time to time taken quite a few pike into the mid twenties.
However one day a good few years ago I went pike fishing below Bredwardine bridge where a club I was in had fishing rights on the top beat of the Garnons water. I did plenty of dead baiting but prefered to rove the banks with a float fished deadbait, preferably a fresh dace.
On this particular day, sometime in the Autmnt as I recall I was using the float fishing method searching the swims some way below the bridge. I cane to a section heavy with willows both on the bank and in the water. There was a small gap between two willows and I dropped the dace into it to have it taken almost immediately. There then followed a hectic tackle straining battle as I tried to keep it out of the sunken willows to my left and right. Eventually I prevailed and when the fish surface I was glad I had my extra large net fish me. I landed the fish with some difficulty but when laid on the bank it looked amazing.
I decided I need a coffee from my flask but before doing so I attached another dace and cast out into a less wooded area below me. I was sat drinking my coffee when to my amazement the float was off again. I latched into it and on this occasion the fish surfaced and tail walked some distance, It looked very big.
To cut a long story short |I landed that one too and they were like peas in a pod. It later transpired the one was 30 1/4 lbs and the other 29 1/2. Possibly my best ever catch and often wondered if a brace this big had been caught on the Wye on the same day before. Be interested to know if anyone knows if it has been done.
Have photo somewhere.
Found it see below; Sorry cant get it right way up
