                                    An Embarrassing Incident

My most embarrassing fishing incident took place at the Nyth when I was gillie there.

It was a late May or June morning when my boss told me that he had invited the Test River keeper Mike Lune to come and fish for salmon.  ,  My boss was a member of the Houfghton Club as I mentioned previously and Mike also came on the annual salmon trip to Delfur on the Spey now and then.

There were only a few fish about and whilst watching the favourite pool, The Cafn, I saw what looked like a good fish show in the quieter neck of the pool.   Thant’s one for Mike I thought and told my boss.

I waited around and lunchtime came and went and no sign of Mike.  No mobiles then of course.   Eventually John Robinson came over to me and said “Doesn’t look like he’s coming Geoff have a go for that fish”.  Are you sure I said but he said go ahead.   So I waded out with I think the spinning rod and a Devon minnow and near the spot where I saw the fish had a decent take and a good scrap    I managed to net the fish OK and was climbing the ladder onto the bank with rod and fish still in the net, not easy, and as I laid the fish down looked up and to my astonishment there was Mike Lunn and my boss walking towards me = Ouch.!!

Nice fish said Mike, it was 24lbs if I remember rightly, and heseemed to take it in good part   I apologised profusely as I’m pretty sure he would have caught it.  Anyway we fished together on until the evening but touched nothing else whatsoever and I was sorry he faced the long trip back to Stockbridge without catching  a fish= though I’m not sure whether he was given that fish or not.

Not my fault really but would have been happier if he had caught the fish that’s for sure.
