Some serious snow starting to fall here now with genuine Scottish type grue on the slower sections of the upper river as temperatures are well below freezing. Opening day up here is looking extremely doubtful at the moment with a red warning of snow until at least tomorrow.
Saw this on the FFF from S. M.SMITH (NK)
Grue, blizzard and the river half frozen over here at Llanstephan and more to come. It may take more than a few days to get back to fishing conditions. 1986 was like this and I remember the noise when in mid March the ice started to break up and disappear downriver. The fishing in April and May was good after that. Fish of 37lbs and 38.5lbs were landed here

I can confirm that. He was too modest to say he caught one of those fish himself. Bob Browning owner of Ty-Nuyedd caught the other.
How do I know. I was at the Nyth then and taxidermied both fish, cased them and also made fibreglass casts of both of them.
When the river ice broke there was a huge ice floe jam which formed above Boughrood Bridge. The noise it made as further ice flows came and rode up on one another adding to the jam was something to behold and hear.
Earlier than that as I recall the Nyth once had six february fish averaging 22lbs.
My first year there I was keen to catch my first fish and had to wait until, if my memory serves me right until about the 17th February before o got one. 17lbs. I think! Ahhh the old days, gone but not forgotten.
