"There is a lag between improving freshwater conditions and salmon returns. Wye salmon have a 4-8 year life cycle. We will see the effect of 2014's freshwater conditions in the runs of 2016-2020.
The famous 1988 salmon run was produced from spawnings in 1981-1984 (it was last run to include a sizable number of Lugg fish). There was a staggering 36% marine survival for the grilse which made up a large proprtion of the catch and it was a wet summer creating ideal fishing conditions. The number of rods fishing the river to exploit this bounty was pretty close to an all time peak".
Not sure many Wye fish these days have an eight or even a seven year life cycle -but what do we know?
