Latest from the Angling Trust.  Seem to be spreading their brief over a too wide range now perhaps. Mark Lloyds blog on climate change is mostly pure speculation.  recent research seems to show it's not happening, at least not to the extent it was once thought.

Angling Trust Joins Climate Coalition

The Angling Trust has joined the Climate Coalition to show our support for action to tackle climate change, which we see as a genuine threat to fish and fishing in the future. Higher temperatures mean less oxygen for fish in the water; more intense and sporadic rainfall will make pollution, floods and droughts worse; and diseases like KHV will flourish.  Read Mark Lloyd’s blog on the subject HERE and if you want to get involved with the huge Speak Up rally in London on Wednesday 17th June then please click HERE.

New Funding Opportunities for Community Projects

Can you think of groundbreaking ways in which fishing could be put at the heart of improvements to local services? Could fishing be part of the solution to a local problem, such as lack of sports provision or anti-social behaviour? Or do you want to have more of an influence on what happens to a treasured local fishing venue? If so, you may be interested in new funding opportunities launched this April with support from the Department for Communities and Local Government. More information at mycommunity.org.uk - search for ‘new programmes’.

Poland vs England Lure Match Helps Build Bridges

In recent years there has sometimes been friction between migrant and English anglers and it is through better understanding that the barriers can be broken down. To this end, the Angling Trust's Building Bridges Project Manager Rado Papiewski and our Freshwater Specialist Group Secretary, Eric Edwards helped organise a friendly match to contribute to ever improving relationships. The match was a great success, Poland won with 338 points to England's 290 and collected the International Lure Challenge trophy kindly donated by the Canal & Rivers Trust. The day finished in fine style when the winning team treated everyone to a Polish sausage barbecue!

Environmental Regulators Show Backbone?

Both the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales are showing some signs that they may have a backbone after all, by serving an ‘anti-pollution works notice’ and an equivalent notice to remediate ‘hydromorphological harm’ under recent legislation implementing the Water Framework Directive. The EA notice was served on a farmer who had refused to put up a (fully subsidised) fence to prevent cattle poaching, causing siltation to the River Clun in Shropshire, while the NRW notice has been served on Conwy Council after it authorised a disastrous ‘flood alleviation’ scheme on a tributary of the River Conwy which replaced sea trout spawning beds with a 200 metre rectangular concrete channel!

Speak Up For The Habitats Directive

Do you think the Habitats Directive has been effective in protecting threatened species and habitats? Do European Union (EU) agriculture and rural development policies generally support the objectives of the Habitats Directives? Is there still a need for EU legislation to protect species and habitats?

These are some of the questions that the European Commission is currently asking members of the public as part of its ‘fitness check’ of the Habitats and Birds Directives. Fish Legal is encouraging all of its members who have seen the Habitats Directive being used to respond to this consultation.

A key concern is that any attempt to reduce regulation in this area of nature conservation could lead to the wholesale revision or ‘watering down’ of the Habitats and Birds Directives, and damage fisheries.

The public consultation opened on 30 April and runs for 12 weeks, ending on 24 July 2015. To answer the short online questionnaire click HERE.

Angling Trust Welcomes New Invasive Non-Native Species Manager Emily Smith

Emily Smith starts work this month as the Angling Trust’s Invasive Non-Native Species Manager. Emily joins the Freshwater team while studying for her PhD at University College London (UCL). Emily's thesis is “Conduits of Invasive Aquatic Species: The Angling Route” and will investigate the risk of anglers inadvertently bringing invasive species to the UK.
