Seems as though the Americans have a care for their salmon when things hot up by closing rivers at a stroke to protect them. Imagine the hue and cry, red tape involved if it were tried here.
Note too the continued requests for conservations methods and angler being urged to return fish as stocks decline. Its plainly not the answer is it, pxxxsing into the wind quite frankly..
Still more interesting than the WUF update below it. Liked the bit about small fish being stranded - just take a look at the upper tribs where salmon where encouraged to go and spawn where they had never been before.
Water now running through the pebbles not over them.

Wye & Usk Foundation News
Update
31st July, 2014
Still no
real change to the on-going drought and even the Royal Welsh Show at Builth
Wells failed to produce a single raindrop! There are promises of imminent
rain but each day seems to reduce what we can expect and the amount
needed to move the river will be large.
The upper
Wye dropped to its lowest level in recent years when the regulation flow from
the Elan dams was switched off during Royal Welsh show week. The sudden drop
was not ideal, leaving a number of small fish stranded to die in the heat or
to be consumed by the delighted herons. Could this have been avoided? So
far there has been no word from Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water or
from Natural Resources Wales, who between them are responsible for the
control. What we can say is that it wasn't a problem of water shortage in the
dams.
Good news
from the first round of the Welsh Government's Nature Fund. Coed Cymru and
the Welsh rivers trusts were awarded £650,000 to plant shelter belts, reduce
run off and tackle diffuse pollution across several catchments - we will give
more details when final confirmation is received.
Good news
too from Goodrich where a 9lb 3oz (his PB!) daughter for Adam
Fisher, WUF's Fisheries Consultant, was born.
There has
been some successful trout fishing but coarse fishing catches have started to
tail off in the rising water temperatures. There have been
no reports of any salmon catches for the last 10 days. There are some
days that have become free at Wyesham - if the weather changes please contact
the Booking Office (number below).
Don't
forget the Herefordshire
Country Fair this weekend - Sunday 3rd August at Caradoc, Sellack.
All the
best from WUF.
