Reports that water quality is deteriorating again on the lower river. No real surprise given the current conditions which must give rise to concerns for fish welfare, particularly salmon. Despite cooler water from the Élan V alley it's effects are only evident for a short distance down the river. With temperatures set to soar further the outlook is poor. Thunderstorms are not what we really want as a local cloudburst will give heavy colour are stir up all the settled sediment possibly causing further problems.
Wouldn't mind betting though that some lower beats are still being raked by flying Cs by some anglers who really have no need to catch another fish.!

Yesterday link to the situation on the Lune is now working.    www.salmonriverdata.co.uk/PDF/ Letter to EA 2014.pdf.    Problems there with the EA are similar to many that we face with just as much lack of concern being shown.  Many of Andy Hurst comments in red and at the end of his letter are very much valid.   I particularly liked this one;

"Why is it that the EA prefer to listen to individuals with absolutely no knowledge of the Salmon runs in rivers rather than listen to the voice of anglers who collectively may have over thousands of years’ experience of the River and much more to offer?"
.
 It's now not PC to be seen to have anything to do with any mitigation or other stocking and as he suggests any EA staff probably now see it as a serious career inhibitor to think otherwise.  Take the money, don,t consult, do what you want to feather your own nest and influence.  Remind you of another organisation? Me Too.

Fish Legal: Fighting Abstraction on the River Test

Southern Water's plan to set up a massive new abstraction near Southampton and deprive the lower River Test of critical flows under drought conditions has been "postponed". The scheme was due to be adopted and permitted this year in order to enable the nearby river Itchen to meet conservation objectives under the Habitat's Directive.
Fish Legal, with our member Testwood & Nursling Fisheries, met Southern Water's Chief Executive and made it clear that 'robbing Peter to pay Paul' in this way would be unlawful. Whilst it is important to make sure the Itchen has a sustainable future it must not be at the expense of the Test.
The plan has now been shelved 'to enable other alternatives to be explored' (notably desalination) for a more 'sustainable' result - code for a solution that does not harm the Test.

Please Spare 10 Minutes for a Survey on IFCAs

Have you had any dealings with your regional Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCA) or attended one of their public meetings?
Were you impressed? Did staff appear interested in their jobs? Do you know what IFCAs are trying to achieve or how they are going about it?  Has your regional IFCA introduced byelaws and, if they have, did you feel your views were taken into account before they were introduced?
These are some of the questions Dera is asking anglers in a current consultation on whether or not IFCAs are meeting their statutory duties.  Feedback from anglers will go into a report which will be put before Parliament.  The more information Defra has to go on the better, so if you can spare 10 minutes to fill in their online questionnaire follow this link: consult.defra.gov.uk/marine/ifca-report
The consultation closes on 1 August. Respond to the consultation and MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD.
