Wye & Usk Foundation News Update

18th February 2014

Our thanks to all of you who came up with names for the Monnow seal. There were many excellent suggestions but perhaps our favourite was "Effin"!
Are we really going to have a few days without rain? The salmon and trout season opens on Wye and Usk in just two weeks (1st Feb for Severn, rather academic given the rain; later for rest of Wales). An opening day start will need at least a week of dry weather in advance of the actual date (3rd March). You will know if this happens!
Events: Please would you note these for this year: 24th May World Fish Migration Day 2014 (WFMD) is a one day global initiative, with local events worldwide, to create awareness on the importance of open rivers and migratory fish. WFMD is held to improve the public's understanding of the importance of open rivers and migratory fish and their needs.
Our Annual Meeting will be at 6.00pm on 24th October at the Three Counties Hotel in Hereford and our Nick Brabner Autumn River Walk on November 23rd. You can see more details of upcoming events here.
The Passport is with the printers. The Upper Escley, Backney and Cwm Wysg Ganol beats return while Cadora is sadly no longer with us. There are ten or so other new beats to try though. Meanwhile, we are working towards upgrading the online booking system in the summer.
From time to time we see something which strikes a chord with our wish for a better environment and the Splosh company of Hay on Wye have solved the problems of throwaway containers and reducing phosphate levels from several domestic cleaning products. You buy concentrated sachets and refill reusable spray containers - so obvious and simple we wish we had thought of it first!
The 2014 Passport will be published in early March. Please let us know if you have changed address since receiving last year's edition.

Bookings for summer fishing are going well but hold back for the start of the salmon and trout season is our advice. We will advise again as soon as we we see an opportunity to start.
All the best from WUF.
