Wye & Usk Foundation News Update

Anyone who has updated a database will know that it is far from straightforward. We have been updating ours and need to apologise in advance if you get this message when you had not asked for it. Six weeks into 2014 and already we have recorded 15" of rain here at Llanstephan. It took until early August for the same amount last year and this year's rain has fallen on top of the 6" in December. Looking at the rainfall map, however, it seems that parts of the upper Wye have missed some of the heaviest downpours reserved for southern England.
Much of our outside work has been held up by the weather, including the start of our latest litter pick marathon which is on hold until we have a drier spell.
The Passport is being proof read and is almost ready to go to the printers. The 2014 edition includes a number of new beats on the Wye and Usk and has expanded into Wales, including fishing on the Towy, Dee, Teifi, Taff, Loughor and some new stillwaters.

There are just 21 days before the salmon and trout season gets underway. With little prospect of low water conditions, salmon anglers will not want to start too far down the catchments. The Wye beats above Hereford should offer the

best chance, even as far up as Builth. The Usk settles more quickly and could fish anywhere ....assuming it finally stops raining. Keep an eye on our salmon catches page for up-to-date news once the season gets underway.
Trout fishing is also dependent on weather and we will keep you posted nearer the start date. Winter coarse fishing has, of course, been almost impossible in the recent floods and considering the forecast, it may be a while longer before it is safe to venture out.
