                                                    SALMON   SOS

I was sitting at home one day mid morning when the telephone rang.  Geoff “ what are you doing ” A VOICE SAID said.  “Not a lot I replied, why?”.  I recognized the voice as a friend, Mike who fishes at Lower Winforton and lives in the Midlands.
“James is into as big fish down the river and needs some help as he has no one to net it, his father is not in sight.  Could you go down and net it for him.”
Well, Winforton is three or four miles away, through a locked gate and down a riverside track.   I did have a key to the gate as I was invited to fish there myself from time to time.  Even so I expressed doubt that the fish would still be attached by the time I got there.   However a friend in need as they say so I jumped into the car and set off.  On reflection it was only perhaps ten or fifteen minutes but seemed much longer at the time.  Anyway I arrived unscathed and eventually found James who was still playing the fish not far above the beat hut.
By this time the fish has just about had enough and I netted it for him.  It was an excellent silver springer which, if I recall correctly weighed in at 24 or 26lbs.   The fish was taken on a fly and on a rod which had had a broken top section that I repaired for him either earlier in the year or perhaps the previous season.

A satisfactory outcome for both of us.

This was the fish;

My fish mentioned in yesterdays post.
