STAY WITH IT TO THE END

TWO THAT DIDN'T GET AWAY

Talking about one getting away it sort of happened to me.   I was at Glanwye at the time and it was changeover day for the time share rods.   Sport was poor to non existent but I knew the next day a keen angler, Barrie O  was coming for the week and I didn't know of a single fish on the beat.

It was a nice evening and before I went home I decided to have a cast up in the Churchouse pool above the lodge.    I took the fly rod and fished down.  Towards the tail end there is a good lie and as the fly came across to my surprise I saw something boil at the fly.  It moved too much water to be anything else but a salmon.   Normally I would have waited several minutes and tried again but as this might be the only chance of a fish I decided to leave it and it might get caught by Barrie tomorrow.

Well he duly arrived the following morning and asked what the prospects were.  I told him the truth but that I did know where there might be a fish if it was still there.  He tackled up and went to the pool where I had seen the fish.  He was a competent fisher and as we got down towards 'the spot' I suggested a take might come in the next two or three cast.  Right on cue it did and he was fast into the fish.  Some time went by and it became apparent that this was in fact a really good fish even more so when it showed itself on the surface.   Anyway I duly netted the fish  which was bigger than we thought It was 30pounds in fact and in prime condition.
Would dearly have liked to have caught that fish myself but had the satisfaction  that Barrie probably appreciated it more than me plus the fact I did what I was paid for.
Hope Barrie is still out there somewhere and still fishing.
