Still high and plenty of water to come.  Amazing how many travel long distances and pay for fishing only to find they can't because the river is too high Never hear of a weather forecast or the webcams.

We all know the state our river is in regarding current salmon stock.  We are facing it seems a virtual wipe out with nothing on the horizon to change this.  Something must be done before it's too late.  We need a new approach, a concerted approach from all involved to address this situation. Wye Salmon Association was formed some years ago to give ordinary salmon anglers a voice as basically they had no representation.  Many of you are already members and I urge you to try and recruit others as without doubt there is strength in numbers.
Its plain, notwithstanding their good intention, WUF nor NRW have have failed to restore out salmon stocks to anywhere near previous levels and the downward trend must be halted.  They need to be man enough to admit this and seek another way, new ideas, new initiatives ,hopefully with new personel, rather than just seeking diverse projects with funding attached to keep themselves going.
WSA are at present contacting all parties involved with a view to find a way forward and we urge everyone to become involved.   How sad would it be that two bodies trying to save the Wye salmon are at either end of the argument and one is  not willing to at the very least even acknowledge the other.
The 'we know best' mentality must come to an end.  Its not working is it and from my own obervations over 20 years it never has to any real degree.  Just to claim it is working year on year plainly does not make it so.. Much vilification has come my way because  of my beliefs but so be it but it gives m no satisfaction to find us in the state we are now in..
There needs to be some humility at the end of the day for the Wye fishery is at stake.
As for the Wye Owners Association, with some notable Wye owners an exception, and the so called Wye Conservator's they are inconsequential at present in my opinion. Why could they not be something other than a talking shop and funding stream for WUF.  How much more money is going down the drain on an experiment 20 years in the making, that has clearly failed.  Lets at least try and do something about it and find a new way forward.

                                              WYE SALMON EMERGENCY

The survival of salmon in our river has been threatened for some time, a fact that I am sure has come as no surprise to you. Stocks are at very low levels and are at risk of further decline to biologically unsafe levels. We believe the number of returning salmon is now so low that we have reached a tipping point beyond which, within a decade, the river will cease to be a self-regenerating salmon fishery. A view supported by a number of specialists including at NRW and EA.

Coupled with ever declining water quality, increasing predation by fish eating birds and other predators, all the evidence points to  the need for bold and urgent action if we are to recover this situation.

Wye Salmon Association are not prepared to sit by and do nothing whilst those responsible seemingly allow the situation to worsen.

Members of our steering team have been therefore working on proposals, particularly in respect of improving salmon stocks, aimed at beginning the process of successfully rehabilitated salmon populations in our river.

We have now begun the first steps towards seeking  approval for these proposals by writing to the CEOs and Board of Directors of both Natural Resources Wales and Environment Agency. A copy of our letter is attached to the bottom of this email for your information,

We will be meeting both NRW and EA staff over the next 4 weeks to discuss further our proposals. We have made it very clear in our letter and in our initial discussions that doing nothing is not an option and if we are to fix this problem we must consider all options.

We will be publishing more about our proposals and how you might help as soon as possible.

In order to maximise our negotiating position, we need to grow our membership, currently standing at just under 300. It is important therefore that we both continue to maintain your support and gain that of other anglers and interested parties. So please pass this message on to your friends and associates and encourage them to join us, it’s only £10 remember.

They can do so via Paypal at www.wyesalmon.com/join-us or by cheque, with full name and contact details and a cheque for £10 payable to WSA, to WSA, Penyhil, Felindre, Brecon, Powys, LD3 0SU.

Yours in Angling
